Graduate Applications

DEADLINE  EXTENDED to Feburary 1st, 2016 for Fall 2016 Admission

Application to the SFSU Creative Writing Graduate Program is a TWO PART PROCESS.

PART ONE: CREATIVE WRITING DEPARTMENT APPLICATION (4 Components)

(Department application period is August 1, 2015 - February 1, 2016.)

  1. One Creative Writing Department M.A. or M.F.A. application form (depending on which program you are applying to), submitted (mailed or hand-delivered) in hard copy with your manuscript sample. M.A. form (pdf); M.F.A. form (pdf). The appropriate form must be printed out, filled in and submitted (in hard copy) with your manuscript.
  2. One manuscript sample of your work: EITHER 15-20 pages of creative nonfiction (double-spaced, single-sided, no smaller than 10 point font, margins no smaller than 1 inch), OR 15-20 pages of fiction OR 15-20 pages of translated fiction along with the original; (double-spaced, single-sided, no smaller than 10 point font, margins no smaller than 1 inch), OR 15 poems; OR 10 translated poems along with the original; OR 1 play: either a finished play of any length, or 20-25 pages of dramatic writing. -Theater plays only! Film scripts, radio plays, or television plays will not be considered. You must submit a writing sample in the genre in which you are applying. Staple or paper clip your manuscript, and put your name on it.  Again, the manuscript sample must be accompanied by either the Creative Writing Department M.F.A. or M.A. Application form.  NOTE: changes, substitutions or additions to your manuscript will NOT be accepted!  Your manuscript cannot be returned. Do not send your only copy.
  3. One unofficial copy of all college and/or university transcripts.  Transcripts may be sent directly from the college and/or university or from you.
  4. Two letters of recommendation.  No special form is necessary. Letters may be sent directly from the letter writer. Must be submitted (mailed or hand-delivered) in hard copy.
  5. Statement of purpose, briefly write (500-1500 words) why you wish to study at the graduate level, what led you to choose creative writing, your experience writing and reading, etc.

PART TWO: CSU APPLICATION FOR GRADUATE STUDY (3 Components)

  1. One  CSU Application for Graduate Study, submitted online at http://www.csumentor.edu   (The statement of purpose/personal statement is included in this online part of the application. Since we ask for the statement to be sent in part one directly to the department, in the space provided in the online CSU Application for Graduate Study, you may simply enter the phrase “sent directly to the department”.)
  2. CSU Application fee; approximately $55.00
  3. One set of official transcripts for all college and/or university coursework, either mailed to the postal address below, or submitted electronically to graddocs@sfsu.edu, by either a third-party delivery service such as eSCRIPT-SAFE, Docufinde, and Parchment on behalf of a regionally accredited U.S. colleges and universities and/or directly from your university.
