Graduate Applications

DEADLINE  January 15, 2018 for Fall 2018 Admission

We are moving to an all online application process; all materials for the application are to uploaded via http://www.calstate.edu/apply . More detailed instructions will be made available on our website in July 2017. Application period is October 1st – January 15th for Fall semester admission (Creative Writing graduate programs at SFSU admits only in Fall semester).

CSU Application for Graduate Admission materials required for either the M.A. English: Creative Writing Degree Objective or the M.F.A. Creative Writing Degree Objective:
___1. One CSU Application for Graduate Study.
___2. CSU Application fee; currently $55.00.
___3. One set of official transcripts for all college and/or university coursework, either mailed to the postal address below, or submitted electronically to graddocs@sfsu.edu, by either a third-party delivery service such as eSCRIP-SAFE, Docufide, Parchment on behalf of  regionally accredited U.S. colleges and universities and/or directly from your university. Please note: If you previously attended SF State University, you do not need to submit an SF State transcript.

___4. Statement of purpose, briefly write (one half to two pages) why you wish to study at the graduate level, what led you to choose creative writing, your experience writing and reading, etc.
___5. One manuscript in one of the following genres: creative nonfiction or fiction: 15-20 pages double-spaced, single-sided pages (either one or more stories, or 15-20 pages of a longer work); 15 poems;  1 play: either a finished play of any length, or 20-25 pages of dramatic writing (theater plays only! No Film scripts, no radio plays, nor television plays; they will not be considered); 10 pages of literary translation into English, accompanied by 10 pages of the literature in the original language. Manuscripts must be legibly typed to be considered. (We're sorry, manuscripts cannot be returned; do not send your only copy.)
___6. Two letters of recommendation, preferably from an academic reference, such as a former instructor or tutor.
