Tenure-Track Position in Creative Writing; Fiction/Global Literature

San Francisco State University, Department of Creative Writing invites applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position with a specialization in fiction and global literature beginning August 2017.

 

The department seeks individuals with a background in creative writing and fiction with a specialization in global literature. 

 

•            The Creative Writing Program at SFSU is one of the nation’s oldest and largest.  Housed separately from the English Department and containing the Poetry Center and American Poetry Archives, it has over 462 majors in three degree programs, the B.A., the M.A., and the M.F.A. Creative Non-Fiction, Fiction, Literary Translation, Playwriting and Poetry are currently its five theses emphases. 

•            With this hire, the Creative Writing Department will both further develop its emphasis in literary translation and strengthen its largest genre, fiction.  Further information about the Creative Writing Department is available at the following websites: http://creativewriting.sfsu.edu and http://poetry.sfsu.edu .

 

Qualifications:

Candidates should have an M.F.A. or equivalent in creative writing.

 

Candidates must have strong publication record in fiction, including at least one book published book of fiction or under contract.

 

Candidates must demonstrate the ability to teach courses in the areas of creative writing, with an emphasis in fiction as well as be conversant with a wide scope of international literature.

 

Excellence in undergraduate and graduate level teaching must be demonstrated through student evaluations of teaching effectiveness and/or peer classroom observations.

 

Responsibilities: The position requires graduate and undergraduate teaching, both fiction and international literature in B.A., M.A. and M.F.A. creative writing programs; mentoring and advising graduate and undergraduate students; reading yearly applications to the graduate programs; contributing to curriculum development; participation in shared governance on campus; campus, community, and professional service; ongoing development of creative work in fiction.

 

Rank and salary: Assistant Professor. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. The CSU provides generous health, retirement and other benefits.
