New Tenure-Track Position in Fiction

San Francisco State University, Department of Creative Writing invites applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position with a specialization in fiction beginning August 2018. The department seeks individuals with a background in creative writing and fiction.  

• The Creative Writing Program at SFSU is one of the nation’s oldest and largest.  Housed separately from the English Department and containing the Poetry Center and American Poetry Archives, it has over 460 majors in three degree programs, the B.A., the M.A., and the M.F.A. Creative Non-Fiction, Fiction, Literary Translation, Playwriting and Poetry are currently its approved programs of study.   

• With this hire, the Creative Writing Department will strengthen its emphasis in fiction, its largest genre.

Qualifications:

Candidates should have an M.F.A. or equivalent in creative writing.

Candidates must have strong publication record in fiction, including at least one novel or collection of short stories published or under contract.

 

Candidates must demonstrate the ability to teach courses in the areas of creative writing, with an emphasis in fiction as well as be conversant with a wide scope of literature.

Excellence in undergraduate and graduate level teaching must be demonstrated through student evaluations of teaching effectiveness and/or peer classroom observations.

 

Responsibilities: The position requires graduate and undergraduate teaching of fiction B.A., M.A. and M.F.A. creative writing programs; mentoring and advising graduate and undergraduate students; reading yearly applications to the graduate programs; contributing to curriculum development; participation in shared governance on campus; campus, community, and professional service; ongoing development of creative work in fiction.

 

Rank and salary: Assistant Professor. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. CSU provides generous health, retirement and other benefits.
