 Clark-Gross Novel Contest for a novel or a novel in progress  $100.00

OPEN TO ALL CREATIVE  WRITING  MAJORS ENROLLED IN BOTH FALL 2018 AND SPRING 2019 SEMESTERS.

Work must be at least 50 pages, typed, double spaced, and sponsored by an SFSU Creative Writing instructor. Please attach 1 coversheet (attached) with your name, address, phone number, SFSU e-mail address, and the name of your novel. (It's OK if your name is also on the novel.) For privacy, put your submission in a sealed envelope, or you can send them via email to cwriting@sfsu.edu. Manuscripts cannot be returned, so please don't submit your only copy!

Ann Fields Poetry Contest  $100.00

OPEN TO ALL CREATIVE WRITING MAJORS ENROLLED IN BOTH FALL 2018 AND SPRING 2019 SEMESTERS.

Jim Highsmith Playwriting Award $2000, for a play of any length on a theme of Gay or Lesbian experience. OPEN TO ALL CREATIVE WRITING MAJORS ENROLLED IN BOTH FALL 2018 AND SPRING 2019 SEMESTERS.

A prize of $2000 will be awarded to the winning play. Two additional awards of $200 each will be given to runners-up in the contest. Works must be original plays intended for stage production, which have not previously been published or received full public production. Work principally intended for radio, television, or screen performance is not eligible, nor are musicals. Only one play may be submitted by an individual or collaboration. One copy of the play should be submitted. This copy should be accompanied by coversheet (attached). Must be clearly typed and securely bound. Clear and legible photocopies are acceptable. For privacy, put your submission in a sealed envelope or send to cwriting@sfsu.edu. Submissions should be made to the Creative Writing  Department, HUM 380.  The mailing address is: Creative Writing Department, SFSU, 1600 Holloway Avenue, San Francisco, CA  94132. Manuscripts cannot be returned; please do not submit your only copy! Final judging will be undertaken by distinguished members of the professional theater community.

Daniel Langton Poetry Contest  $100.00

Submit an essay or poem of any length on a topic of concern to women, women's issues, or women's experience in society, and should discuss personal values such as the importance of higher education, health and physical education, social justice, empathy and openness to life experience. Candidate must demonstrate on-campus or off-campus involvement in a literary or poetry journal, and must demonstrate active support of poetry readings either by regular attendance or with event-organization activities. Candidate must have at least a 3.0 GPA, be enrolled full time (9 units for graduate students 12 units for undergraduate students) in the current and following semester, and must show financial need based on informaiton provided by financial aid. The Wilner Award in Short Fiction $100.00

Submit ONE short story; must be typed and double-spaced, and sponsored by an SFSU Creative Writing instructor.  Please attach 1 coversheet (attached) with your name, address, phone number, e-mail address, and the name of your short story. *Award is coordinated with financial aid, according to State and Federal regulations.

Brainard, Dickey, & Ylvisaker Scholarships

All newly admitted M.A. and M.F.A. students are automatically considered for the following scholarships:

  • Joe Brainard Fellowship (two or more prizes annually, amount varies between $1000-$5000)
  • The William Dickey Fellowship in poetry (two or more prizes annually; amount varies between $500 – $5000)
  • The Miriam Ylvisaker Fellowship in Fiction (one prize annually; amount varies between $500-$2000 scholarship)

No application is necessary; all newly admitted M.A. and M.F.A. students are automatically considered for these scholarships.These scholarships are coordinated with financial aid awards according to State and Federal regulations.
