C W 512GW[01]              Craft of Fiction GWAR                                Online asynchronous

Prerequisites: Restricted to Creative Writing majors; GE Area A2; C W 301 or equivalent. (ABC/NC only) This summer we're going to repeatedly ask the question What is Craft? The term “craft” gets thrown around in creative writing classrooms, literary magazines or journals, articles, and essays— in every corner of the writing world someone is talking about the craft of writing. The craft ideas we will analyze and experiment with can be applied to many kinds of writing, but for our purposes, we’ll focus on writing short fiction. I’m using the word “ideas” intentionally. Ideas can be reformed, repurposed, discussed and discarded. Ideas can be changed. I welcome you to bring in your own ideas about the craft of writing fiction and reflect on how they intersect with the ideas of other writers.

We'll look at fiction from: Mary Gaitskill, Jorge Luis Borges, May-lee Chai, George Saunders, Venita Blackburn, Gina Barriault, Anthony Veasna So, Timothy Laurence Marsh, N.K. Jemisin, Tommy Orange, Danielle Evans, Yoon Choi, Carmen Maria Machado, Bryan Washington, Amelia Gray, and Ted Chiang, and many more!

With craft essays from: Alice LaPlante, Matthew Salesses, Michelle Carter, Kiese Laymon, Thomas King, and Toni Morrison
