Congratulations to Creative Writing MFA student Allie Riby on being a 2022 Fulbright Scholar!

Allie Rigby is a graduate student in the Creative Writing department who graduates this May. Back in October of 2021, she applied for the Fulbright in Romania because it seemed like a unique chance to connect with university students from a culture different than her own, and exchange ideas with students who are at a pivotal stage of their own educational journey. At SFSU, Allie become fascinated by the complexity of literary canons, and she wants to learn from students about the stories and literature that helped shape their own complex identities and core beliefs.

When asked about her aim with the Fulbright ETA, Allie has many thoughts. "It is my hope to create and contribute to vibrant spaces for students and the local community," Allie explains, "I want these spaces to be a brave space, and one where we can share and challenge the stories we tell, and are told, to be true."

For independent research, time allowing, Allie hopes to research the poetry and fascinating life of Nina Cassian, a Romanian poet who satirized, in her later career, the government led by President Nicolae Ceaușescu.
